In the first half of the movie, I wanted to join the lead character in her idyllic world hearkening of a time past, a culture past, and an animation style long since abandoned in mainstream "cartoons." Only having watched several Asian movies did it prepare me for a bittersweet second half. Having said that, it was torture sitting that long in the movie hoping for a different outcome than what we would eventually be presented. I don't know the source folk tale the movie was based on but I do see traces of the Little Mermaid in it. It just shows how universal some fairy tale themes are and how they are altered just a tad depending on the culture.
If I was basing my enjoyment just on the last half and it's length, I would give this a lower rating. However, I am basing this on the fact that Studio Ghibli continues to put out meaningful movies, ala, Graveyard of the Fireflies." While there is a place for fantastical worlds and Disneyfied endings to fairy/folktales for the occasional escapism one needs to take in life, the source material for those Disney movies were very dark. I think it's necessary to fill one's childhood with a good balance of both because life doesn't always go how you want. There was nary a child in my showing which is a shame because I think mature children could have enjoyed this as well. The surprise in my showing was that there were so many men in the audience who did not look like they were drug there by a wife or girlfriend. Maybe they are like me with a love for Studio Ghibli and anything they do.

I've got chills. The scariest part is that, considering the speed of technological progress, this movie is actually fairly plausible. Watch aeronauts free. I don't like seeing Anne Hathaway on a bike. I expect her to get hit by a truck. Firstly, anybody who criticizes this film for not being historically accurate doesn't really "get" flims.
This film is about breaking out of the humdrum and ordinary. This film is about having the moxie to try something bold.
Who among us has not had an idea shot down without being allowed a fair presentation? Who among us has not persevered with their idea despite the naysayers, risking humiliation such as being publicly outed as "poor.
It can't be a spoiler to say that the baloon goes up. Kudos to the film for attempting to show what went in to the construction of balloons of the era, and the fact that the sponsor would want maximum entertainment value for his investment.
Kudos also that this is an art film. The little boy running along representing our imagination wishing to escape the humdrum. And the way altitude effects were presented deserves an oscar. The further escapades to control the balloon were very well portrayed and did indeed keep us at the edge of our seats. Alfred Hitchcock would have given two thumbs up for the suspense value.
The characters were likeable and their acting was first rate. The exprecionist license that the filmmakers took were very well done.
Everyone involved in this production should be very proud.

The use of camera and music/sounddesign doesn't reach the level of an average student film. Everything was announced and explained, no subtleties, no room for contemplation. The undoubtedly talented actresses were the only point of light in these films. Unfortunately drowned in a plot that not in any moment is believable. When at the end the granddaughter is played clearly by the same actress as the main character the audience in the cinema where I was started to laugh. Couldn't more painfully indicate the state of unbelief in which this film had to be endured.
