Matthew Pope's debut stars Bethany Anne Lind as a single mother with a fresh corpse to hide. Loosely related to dramas like Frozen River, in which the perils inherent to the working-class crime film are complicated by single motherhood, Matthew Pope's Blood on Her Name watches as a woman's attempt to rid herself of a dead body soon has her wishing she'd just called the cops on herself. A tense debut built around a compelling lead performance by Bethany Anne Lind, it benefits from a couple of graceful storytelling flourishes and a persuasive sense of character. Prospective distributors shouldn't take its Fantasia premiere as a sign that its audience is limited to genre die-hards. Leigh Tiller (Lind) runs a failing auto garage once owned by her now-incarcerated husband. Her widowed father Richard (Will Patton) is the town sheriff, but some rift between the two leaves Leigh fairly stranded in this isolated town; the closest thing she has to a friend may be Rey (Jimmy Gonzales) the only mechanic she's able to keep on payroll. But Rey's duties don't include dead-body disposal. The body is dead from the start. The movie will only explain how he got that way piecemeal over its running time, like a dishonest witness whose story can't hold up under cross-examination. What's clear immediately is that Leigh panics, and the first steps she takes to cover things up doom her to what follows — if only because her humanity keeps her from behaving as a killer would: She has the dead man in a boat and is ready to toss him into a lake when the phone in his pocket chimes with voicemail. Turns out he has a son who's worried that he didn't come home last night. Leigh can't let him and the boy's mother spend their lives wondering if the man just ran off. She risks a lot to leave the body where they will find it; then, far from the evidence, she realizes she may have left bread crumbs that will lead back to her. Lind navigates an emotional minefield as Leigh spends the next day or two trying to dig herself out of this jam. There's her concern for her son Ryan (Jared Ivers) a teenager who's already on probation and may be headed toward his dad's fate; her resentment for the father she's forced to leave Ryan with; and her need to keep Rey from deducing why she's suddenly so irritable and secretive around the garage. In his smaller role, Gonzales stands out as the story's most morally uncompromised character; Rey wants to help before he knows what the problem is, and the actor projects a concern complicated by the things Rey accidentally oversees. (In between attempts to fix the mess she's in, Leigh does some illicit self-medicating. ) If Pope and Don M. Thompson's script is a little coy about how the man in the garage got himself dead, the parallel mystery of what lingers between Leigh and her father unfolds more gracefully. Pope offers nicely staged flashbacks, some drug-induced, in which Leigh witnesses childhood trauma from multiple perspectives. Leigh's present-tense problems may all trace back to her trying to protect others — innocent bystanders, a dead man's loved ones, a son who may soon have two parents in prison. Thanks bro you brought me tears 😭. 705 Anime fans as you'll all no doubt know I very rarely make a spoiler post for an anime film or TV show. That is because I want you to experience the product with very little to know knowledge about what's going on sadly tho that actually can't happen with this film as even the plot summery gives away a key plot point and so i'm going to pretty butcher my own summery of the plot just to keep it spoiler free and so here is my spoiler filled review of Ride Your Wave aka Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara enjoy. The plot for of the film as spoiler free as I can make it is boy meets girl something happens to either the boy or the girl and then there's the aftermath. You see I told you I was going to butcher it but your just going to have to take my word for it when I say that there's pretty much no plot outside of the central theme which I can't get into because it's spoiler but I do wish that there was more of an actual story in this film. Starring in the film is Rina Kawaei as Hinako Mukaimizu, Ryota Katayose as Minato Hinageshi, Honoka Matsumoto as Yōko Hinageshi and Kentaro Ito as Wasabi Kawamura. Yes as you can no doubt tell i'm basing this review of the original Japanese dub which as alot of will know is a mildly rare thing for me to do however as there is no dub for this film out and it doesn't look like there will be any out soon. As for what I thought about the acting in the film it honestly was really good altho it really is hard for me to judge Japanese voice acting since i've not heard any of these actors so I have no idea what they could do when there at their best or worst. The script of the film really does give the actors alot to work with and I do feel that that does help the actors since all they'd have to do is just say the lines and not add in character traits. The animation for the film was done by Science Saru a company owned by director Masaaki Yuasa and is there third feature film. In terms of what I thought about the animation it's shockingly really good and I say shockingly because i've seen nothing from them and so just based of this film I can say that they do a good job when it comes to the animation with alot of scenes leaping of the screen which is something that I very rarely get to say. SPOILERS START HERE. There we go anime fans anything said beyond this point will be a spoiler and so you shouldn't anything beyond the spoiler warning if you haven't seen the film. So then what really did shock me was the fact that the main male character Minato dies nearly half way through the film that was something that I never saw coming and I couldn't mention it in the summery because it's a plot point his death has an effect on our main female character Hinako. Part of the joy and sadness of this film for me is seeing the relationship between Minato and Hinako develop as they go from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend but then it comes crashing down when Minato dies. How the film deals with grief is honestly really interesting since we get to see Hinako go through the stages of grief eventually learning that in order for Minato to move on she must also accept his death. Part of what made Hinako's arc seem more real to me is the fact that is that she's young and I know that sounds weird but imagine if your in early twenties you fall in love with someone and then that person suddenly dies it would be crushing. Which is what happens here for a large portion of the film she's crushed and she might possibly feel guilty for Minato's death but i'm not sure and she has to go through this horrible thing and she comes out stronger because of it. Hinako's character at the start of the film is completely different from the character we see at the end of the film. Since at the start she's sort of happy go lucky she's not unpacked any of her boxes but then over the course of the film she learns more responsibility and that is something that I don't think the Hinako at the start of the film would even consider being like at all and it was something that I thought was very interesting. As you can see by the above picture the film has an art style that honestly reminded me alot of Summer Wars. Considering that I liked that film that is not a bad thing at all but at the same time there was times during the more emotional moments so I do feel that they should have tweaked the designs just to suit those moments and make them more effective but since they didn't the art style and designs become a little bit distracting. SPOILERS END HERE. Overall this is an anime film that I can very easily recommend to any anime fans regardless of if you like the slice of life genre or not. This is also a film that does have plenty of flaws some of which I have mentioned in this review but if this is something that you can get past then there's a really enjoyable film in there and it helps that the pacing is honestly really good and so with all of this in mind the film gets a 7. 5 out of 10 from me. Watch Mardaani 2 trailer here: Credit to Puthran, and both Mardaanis, for that matter, for sketching negative characters as ruthless as Sunny, or Karan (Tahir Raj Bhasin in Mardaani. Sunny of Mardaani 2 has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is evil to the bone. And Puthran or the narrative doesn't apologise for him. Sunny is driven by a feudal mindset - the one which demands women stay within their 'aukaat. Sunny tortures women because he can overpower them with his physical strength. His ultimate kick is causing women maximum hurt - something that goes beyond physical hurt in his mind - hurting their 'honour. But then, he doesn't stop at that. He turns their embarrassment into a spectacle - hanging his half-dead, bleeding, near-mangled victim by a noose for all to find. Of course, he wants credit et al. For a moment there, you will be reminded of Mindhunters, and a chill will run down your spine. On the flipside is Shivani, a straight-talking cop who puts her job before her gender, even while the rest of the world can't. She knows men at the top will get away with being bossy (read: harsh, short-tempered or just plain cruel) but a woman has to keep massaging egos. Except, she doesn't care. And both actors deliver, and how! Rani Mukerji may have the might of perhaps the biggest and strongest production house in India, but with every performance, she proves that she doesn't take it for granted. In Mardaani 2, she's once again silenced naysayers, if any. Vishal Jethwa takes your breath away - like you're looking at Fear Incarnate. He, in places, outshines Rani, even though both characters are equally strongly written. The entire film is shouldered on these two, and while other characters are made available for support, the actors are hardly given the scope to do anything more. The storyline is something that caters to the majority of the audience. That scene where Shivani whips away at Sunny with a belt as the camera is panned at her from below (we've seen it in the trailer, so no spoilers here) is disturbing but strangely satisfying. It is perhaps the same 'satisfaction' that makes people take to the streets and say 'Hyderabad Police Zindabaad' when the rapists of the Telangana veterinarian are shot dead in an 'encounter. There are muffled cheers for Shivani across the semi-packed theatre on the first day, first show. But the film leaves so much out that it is almost heartbreaking when it ends. Only 1 hour 45 minutes down, we could have invested another 15 or 20 minutes if only Mardaani 2 had gone that far. Sunny personifies the mindset that is plaguing India. He is the rapist. But he is also a pawn in a larger, dirty game. Sadly, the story doesn't even go as far as to expose the men in positions of power who are actually brokering this mindset and finds happiness in catching a small (albeit evil) fish. Granted the narrative could have gotten preachy, or the film could have gotten lengthy - the bane of all Hindi films anyway. But isn't that the true test of good writing and screenplay? Still, a strong performance-backed film like Mardaani 2 is worth a watch. It will disturb you - but not more than what news reports are already doing to you (or should be. Vax dax 7 I denna vår sjunde krönika av febrigt exponerande av rara vinylutgåvor med gudomlig musik – nej, vi tänker definitivt INTE hålla tillbaks på superlativen, det finns ingen anledning med Jante- handbroms i denna typ av texter -  vill vi presentera en klassisk  europeisk platta inom den friare jazzen.  En av de verkligt legendariska grupperna, som var med om att bygga upp och om den Europeiska scenen inom friare former av jazzmusikaliska uttryck under tidigt 70 – tal, var Brötzmann/ Van Hove / Bennink. En trio som fullkomligen kokade av energi, fluxus upptåg och musikalisk skönhet samt våldsamt musikaliskt utspel! Det centrala bolaget för Peter Brötzmann under hela hans musikaliska gärning har alltid varit FMP (Free Music Production. Baserat i Berlin och lett av eldsjälen, den karismatiske Jost Gebers, som genom tjocka glasögon och välansad valross mustasch lett den musikaliska utvecklingen och inriktningen, genom sitt bolag och genom de festivaler som varit kopplade därtill. Flera svenska grupper (Position Alpha, Per Henrik Wallin, Sven Åke Johansson, Gush) har spelat på festivalen genom åren, men det har framförallt varit en spelplats för mellaneuropeisk improvisation, med en del amerikansk infusion (Frank Wright, Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, Charles Gayle och andra. Position Alpha gjorde förresten ett bestående intryck på de sk. ”jazzskäggen” i Tyskland på en (icke så) bejublad konsert, där man lät saxofonerna stå tillbaka för nya uttryck på gitarr och dragspel. Där satt många skägg fast i den smak- konservativa brevlådan. De underbara saxofonisterna från västkusten har inte fått komma tillbaks… FMP gav ut tre absolut essentiella album 1971: Elements (FMP 0030) Couscouss de la Mauresque (FMP 0040) och The End (FMP 0050. Alla med förut nämnda trio. I en absolut genial formgivning av Brötzmann själv, med tre separata omslag i respektive svart, orange och grönt. Silkscreen tryckta… Men… den verkligt första utgåvan var med de tre vinylerna utan omslag… i en kartong… där mottagarens adress kunde skrivas på omslaget, med plats för frimärken och en individuell numrering… samt en affisch med en mycket speciell historia medlagd i boxen! Detta är BOXEN … som har ALLT: Musiken är fantastisk, utom ord. Designen är genial. Den luktar och känns bra… Ett av de främsta dokumenten av tidig europeisk frijazz. Brutalt och vackert. Musiken är onekligen en av de mest kompromisslösa och intensiva någonsin! På dessa inspelningar gästas gruppen av eminente Albert Mangelsdorff på trombon, som lyckas balansera musiken på ett utsökt och genommusikaliskt sätt, i funktion icke olikt det sätt huru Lars lystedt lyckas tygla sina adepter i Lars Lystedt Sextet, omnämnt i förra vaxdax- krönikan. OJ nr 1, 2013. Om än musiken låter annorlunda, så handlar det likväl om balans. Balans. Brötzmanns tenorsax glöder av extas, Benninks skrot och skräp flyger genom tid och rum och Van Hoves piano visar vart skåpet skall stå! Då denna utgåva är gjord i maximalt 200 numrerade ex, så har vi här en verklig holy grail inom den ifrågasättande jazzen. Men det som ger denna box en extra dimension är den av Brötzmann designade affischen som medföljer paketet! Följande historia är rätt spektakulär och berättad här med tillåtelse av Peter Brötzmann själv: Peter Brötzmann var och är en aktiv bildkonstnär. Han var mycket delaktig i den tidiga Fluxus rörelsen med namn som Joseph Beuys, Yoko Ono, George Maciunas men framförallt för sitt arbete med den legendariske video- och bildkonstnären Nam Jun Paik från Korea. Brötzmann jobbade under ett par intensiva år som assistent till Paik. Han iordningsställde bl. a. flera av de klassiska preparerade pianon som Paik arbetat fram. Detta var under samma tid då Brötzmann började experimentera med musik, parallellt med att han bl. arrangerade jazz konserter för bla. Charlie Mingus o andra, lokalt i området runt Wuppertal. Det finns en fullständigt fantastisk affisch som Brötzmann designat i samband med en Mingus- konsert i Tyskland. Tyvärr i endast ett överlevande känt exemplar (f. ö. utställt på Ystads Konstmuseum år 2000. Jobbet för Paik var intensivt. Men denna pionjärtid för omkullvältande konceptkonst har få jämförelser i tid och gärning. Paik iscensatte 1963 en utställning på klassiska Gallerie Parnass i Wuppertal. Utställningens ide´ var att fylla galleriets största rum med en gigantisk väderballong. Brötzmann var behjälplig vid detta iscensättande. Ballongen placerades i galleriet. Blåstes upp. Täckte därefter effektivt alla dörrar och fönster. Ingen kommer in. Ballongen är väldigt mycket i vägen. Vernissagens besökare tvingas att stå utanför för allmän beskådan och förundran. En av besökarna, med tillhörande cigarett, var dock positionerad alltför nära den uppblåsta ballongen. BANG! Oaktsamhet och dålig timing medför att ballongen helt sonika exploderar i hundratals bitar. Slut på utställningen. Brötzmann frågade därefter Paik om han kunde samla in och spara de fragment som fanns kvar av den tillintetgjorda ballongen. Vilket gick bra. Det är just dessa gummifragment av den olyckliga väderballongen som är omsorgsfullt fastsatta på den förut nämnda affischen i den tidigare, med rätta, bejublade FMP boxen! Ett unikt Nam Jun Paik/ Peter Brötzmann original! Denna affisch är på alla sätt en klassiker. Denna box är på alla sätt en klassiker. Och framförallt är musiken på dessa tre vinyler… klassisk!
