. Listening to this brings back the scenes as if I'm watching it again. To me, this version is perfection because you can tell that Ruthie channelled her own personal demons into it. I do feel it's a bit of apples an oranges to compare these performances. Same song and same musical, yes, but not all acting is created equally. Performing for a stage is far different than performing for the camera. The two broadway singers were singing for the stage, using a vocal styling designed to fill an acoustic space. The film actress didn't need to sing in that style but had to bring the acting chops due to the incredible detail taken from the camera. Vocal Stylings: Lea Salonga and Anne Hathaway tie as first for their prospective genres. I chose Lea because I feel her voice has more soul, and darker undertones suitable for the role of a woman whose life is torn apart. Anne Hathaway didn't have any contenders but I do like that her style was to not so much bring the music but to keep the audience mindful of the character's humanity. I did not choose Ruthie Henshall because I felt it was a broadway singer singing a broadway song, and not Fantine. Acting: I feel this is truly an unfair comparison. Perhaps Ruthie Henshall was focusing more on the singing than she would have during a production? Lea Salonga definitely brought several subtle elements into her vocal performance to convey the mood of the song. And Anne. the only other adaptation I have seen is the normal film from the 1889s with Liam Neeson and Uma Thurman as Fantine. I feel Anne Hathaway put a lot more grit and anger into her performance, rather than Thurman's self wallowing Fantine. Thanks for reading.

Les Miserables (2019) is a well acted, loose, updated version of Victor Hugo's classic novel. Damien Bonnard plays a sympathetic police officer, assigned to a new team, policing an intercity town in France. He is met with difficulties from the people, as well as from his fellow officers, however he is able to hold it together. I would recommend this film to anyone that enjoys good cinema. К кинематографу, строго говоря, это имеет весьма опосредованное отношение — как вряд ли кто-то возьмется судить эти песенки с точки зрения поэзии, хотя там есть размер и рифма, так «Отверженные» не становятся фильмом только из-за того, что Хупер иногда разбивает крупные планы звезд лихими компьютерными панорамами. Приобщилась. Рассказываю. Все в этом фильме, вроде, хорошо. Местами - так и вообще блестяще. Энн Хэтэуэй просто демонически красивая женщина, ее лицо прекрасно даже в грязи и с огрызками волос. Вообще, Фантина в ее исполнении это жемчужина всего мюзикла. Кто-то из актеров сказал в своем интервью: "я сотни раз слышал песню "I dreamed a dream", но только сейчас понял, о чем она". У меня было примерно так же. Невероятное по силе выступление, вызывающее сильнейшие эмоции. Единственный вопрос к Фантине это цвет ее глаз и волос. Казалось бы - мелочь, но, насколько я помню книгу, Фантина была эдаким белокурым ангелом (произведшим на свет свою точную копию Козетту). У Хэтэуэй темные волосы и жгучие карие глаза. Не знаю, почему ее не стали перекрашивать (тем более, что волосы в итоге срезали по-настоящему). Ничего страшного в этом нет, брюнетки тоже рожают блондинок, но вопрос, тем не менее, остался. Белую королеву в "Алисе" она играла с "правильным" цветом волос, а тут отступили от текста. Рассел Кроу, вторая жемчужина фильма, тоже блестяще справился с ролью. Вообще, его персонаж показался мне самой драматичной фигурой во всей этой истории. Его герой не вызывает отрицательного отношения. Да, он гоняется за хлебокрадом Вальжаном, но делает это не из жестокости или в припадке упоения властью, а потому что придерживается строжайших моральных принципов, трактуя каждую буковку закона с педантичной буквальностью. И, тем не менее, в нужный момент он находит в себе сил отказаться от собственных принципов, повинуясь чувству справедливости. Хотя такой отказ и принуждает его вырвать из себя эти самые принципы с кровавыми корнями, на которых, собственно, и держится вся его жизнь. Отличная работа, мистер Кроу. И поете вы тоже неплохо. Как ни странно, но мне не очень понравился Хью Джекман. Как-то тускловато он выглядел на фоне Хэтэуэй и Кроу. Не вызвал он во мне, почему-то, никакого чувства. Вроде бы есть с ним сильные сцены, особенно в начале, но потом он как-то растаял среди декораций. Придраться не могу, но и восхититься нечем. Маленькая Козетта и Гаврош - симпатичные модельные ребятки. Гаврош, по-моему, маловат для своей роли, но пел очень живенько. Аманда Сейфрид в роли выросшей Козетты - само совершенство. Образ схвачен намертво, она идеально воплощает в себе чистоту, невинность и красоту спасенной Вальжаном Козетты. Голос высокий, чистый, глаза - бездонные. Очень подходящий образ, чтобы герой Эдди Редмэйна мог влюбиться в него с первого взгляда. Чета Тенардье, безусловно, является комической составляющей мюзикла. Хелена Бонэм-Картер в роли мадам Тенардье получилась очень своеобразной: алчной, расторопной, в меру обаятельной и неприятной. Вообще эта пара непрерывно вызывала ассоциации с лисой Алисой и котом Базилио. В романе это просто жадные, порочные люди, но в этой экранизации они не лишены обаяния знаменитого дуэта из "приключений Буратино". А еще мне очень понравилась Саманта Баркс в роли Эпонины и ее пение. Безответная любовь в ее исполнении выглядит очень правдоподобно и вызывает искреннее сочувствие. Почему же, учитывая весь этот блеск и роскошь, я не могу оценить фильм на пять? Возможно, он на них и тянет, но мне было непросто посмотреть его за один раз целиком. Все-таки, на мой субъективный взгляд, фильм вышел очень затянутым. Так получилось за счет постоянного пения, изредка прерываемого на обычные диалоги. Моменты этих диалогов казались мне островками минутного отдыха перед очередной пачкой переживаний, положенных на музыку, и перепевок актеров друг с другом. Да, я понимаю, что мюзикл есть мюзикл, там и положено петь как можно больше. Но вот, скажем, "Мулен руж" в этом смысле смотрелся легче, потому что музыкальная составляющая была в нем представлена в виде вполне уместных вкраплений. Стоит ли смотреть? Определенно стоит тем, кто спокойно может пойти в оперу и высидеть на стуле три часа под песни, в которых, собственно, и заключается сюжет. Если вы сродни Дриссу из фильма "1+1" относитесь к подобному, как "Ахххххахахахаха! Дерево! Поющее дерево!!! Да еще и на немецком!! А сколько это будет продолжаться? - Три часа. - Охренеть!! ", то даже не знаю. Скорее всего, будет просто скучно. И - да. Не стоит тащить детей с целью приобщения к прекрасному. Почти три часа пения на разные моральные темы они могут просто не высидеть. Я вот лично устала под конец. Но тем не менее, эта экранизация мюзикла получилась прекрасной. 9 «Отверженные» — напоминание о главном. Я сознательно не читал никаких отзывов, не хотелось портить свое впечатление от увиденного. Я уверен, что найдется масса людей, которые будут писать / говорить, что этот фильм — полная фигня, что ждали, когда же он закончится, потому что им было скучно. Другие им будут вторить, пытаясь опошлить некоторые сцены, отсылая нас к теме педофилии. Третьи скажут, что персонажи просты, несодержательны. Четвертые просто устали слушать английский, ведь это же не родной ненормативный русский. Мое глубочайшее убеждение, что «Отверженные» - это как запах кофе в парфюмерном магазине. Это как когда ты запутался, в голове такая каша и неожиданно понимаешь, что решение проблемы лежало на поверхности. Все потому, что самые простые истины уже забыты или искажены. Порой не нужны сложные образы, нужно лишь напомнить себе, что такое чистая любовь матери и «отца» к дочери, что такое долг, милосердие, дружба... Люди уже настолько стали черствыми и злобными, что о самом простом нужно постоянно говорить и говорить. А когда тебе напоминают такой великолепной музыкой — это истинное блаженство для зрителя и слушателя. Всемирно известная "I dreamed a dream" прозвучала так ярко и трогательно в исполнении Энн Хэтэуэй, что я не могу представить, что кто-то мог остаться равнодушным. Последняя сцена — самый настоящий гимн свободе. А в нашей стране особенно полезно как можно чаще слушать такие гимны, дабы искоренить "слепое" повиновение и бездумное соглашательство. Я уверен, что для каждого из актеров съемка в таком фильме и право воплотить легендарные образы, созданные великим Гюго, были огромной честью. Да и Джекману далеко до Вилкинсона. Но всё сделано точно по мюзиклу, не римейк. И фильм, как видеоклип, отлично раскрывает настроение и смысл песен. В этом то и прелесть. И в этом похоже была основная идея фильма.... И в принципе все правы. Фильм сильный. Беспристрастных точно не будет. 1 Роман "Отверженные" входит в тройку моих любимых произведений, посему увидев около месяца назад афишу экранизации, я был несказанно рад. Хотя и несколько огорчен выбором исполнителя на главную роль (одеяние Кроу вкупе с суровым выражением лица олицетворяющим "суровое торжество закона" не оставляло сомнений что он - Жавер). Конечно, Хью Джекмана никак нельзя назвать слабым актером, но амплуа Россомахи, персонаж в «фильме 43», танцы в рекламе «липтон» несколько отторгали восприятие его в роли Жана Вальжана. Кроу же, напротив ассоциируемый, прежде всего с гладиатором Максимусом, в моем представлении прекрасно подходил на эту роль. Но все это было не важно, ведь появилась возможность вновь пережить сюжетную линию величайшего произведения в новом крупномасштабном и высокобюджетном современном проекте. Стараясь оградить себя от отзывов, не смотря трейлер, я был ошарашен новостью о формате произведения лишь за 5 мин до его просмотра. Но хоть и возникло чувство разочарования, я непременно решил посмотреть фильм, пусть и музыкальный. В конце концов, и в нашей версии «Трех мушкетеров» были вокальные партии, которые отнюдь не испортили впечатления о повествования Александра Дюма, хотя я все же надеялся, что петь будут не часто. К тому же я не точно знал, что ждать от этого мюзикла, поскольку поклонником сего жанра не являюсь. В детстве очень ярко врезался в память "Бриолин", где все пели и танцевали, и в этом была вся соль, а вот как будут выглядеть страдания, душевные смятения и переживания персонажей «отверженных» трудно было представить. И вот фильм начался, впечатлила красота съемок, огромный корабль, грим Хью Джекмана был хорош, но все остальное казалось так глупо, что даже недостойно комментирования: неуместное бодрое пение каторжников, представление Жавера, его просьба принести флаг, текст песен… После фразы объясняющей зрителю всю невинность нашего персонажа: «я лишь украл кусок хлеба», я вышел из зала, осознав для себя наконец, что означало слово «мюзикл». По выходу из кинозала я испытывал дикую злобу, постепенно переросшую в обиду на то, что любимое произведение уже не засияет новыми красками при современных возможностях кинематографа. А когда эмоции поутихли, я посмотрел предыдущую версию с Лиамом Нисоном и Джеффри Рашем и понял, что это ни к чему. Здесь важна верная хронология, атмосфера, игра актеров, а не компьютерная графика. То, что мы знаем о внутреннем мире персонажа должно соответствовать его образу на экране, и этот образ не поёт, отнюдь не поёт. А мюзикл должно быть замечательный, хоть я и мало что в них понимаю, но судя по многочисленным положительным оценкам, он удался. И да простят мне фанаты этого жанра дальнейшую едкость - ну разве можно ставить отрицательную оценку творению, удостоенному 8 номинаций на Оскара. Да, у «Чикаго» их было 13, да, слабый вокал, но бюджет сделал свое дело и кассовые сборы компенсируют недочеты с лихвой, так что – твердая пятерка. Браво! Ставлю единицу лишь для того, чтобы слова эти дошли до адресата, тех кому в высшей мере небезразлично это великое произведение великого человека. И как протест против перевода спектакля с театральных сцен на экраны кинотеатров. Но краски чуждые с летами… Никто не будет так яро нападать на «Чикаго», «Мулен Руж», или «Мама Миа», ибо они не подкреплены идеологической основой, так восхваляемой каждым, кто проникся рукописью Гюго. Роман «Отверженные» слишком дорог нашим сердцам, эта книга – памятник канонам совести, благородства, чести, сострадания – памятник тому, что кажется скоро уйдет в музей. 7 Я поймал себя на мысли, что пишу рецензии сюда только тогда, когда сокрушаюсь по поводу ханжества некоторых людей. Стоит мне прийти сюда с мыслью о том, что всё просто замечательно, как в топе я натыкаюсь на сплошные колы и двойки, давно уже. И иногда так случается с культовыми даже фильмами. Видел я тут такую претензию, что, мол, неизвестно на что сходили. Люди, имейте привычку знакомиться с тем, на что идете. Некоторым станет открытие, что этот мюзикл был не придуман ради того, чтобы его снять, а уже пару десятков лет держится на ведущих театральных сценах мира. Увы, я не читал Гюго, по крайней мере "Отверженных" я не читал. Так что же не нравится? Скучно, говорят. А как еще предлагаете описывать душевные страдания людей несколько часов? Неужели кто-то думает, идя на Гюго, что будет какой-то экшн, скажем. Ряд вполне себе правдоподобных ситуаций, хорошо снятых и хорошо сыгранных, что и требуется от кино! Все остальные претензии к Гюго и создателям мюзкила, мне кажется. Фильм прекрасный, Джекман наконец-то актер, а не Джекман. Местами даже пронимает. Снято прекрасно, сыграно неплохо. В конце кинозал был полон сморкающихся и плачущих людей, прошу заметить, не только домохозяек, но и суровых брутальных мужиков. Myriel treats Valjean with kindness, and Valjean repays the bishop by stealing his silverware. When the police arrest Valjean, Myriel covers for him, claiming that the silverware was a gift. The authorities release Valjean and Myriel makes him promise to become an honest man. Eager to fulfill his promise, Valjean masks his identity and enters the town of Montreuil-sur-mer. Under the assumed name of Madeleine, Valjean invents an ingenious manufacturing process that brings the town prosperity. He eventually becomes the town’s mayor. Fantine, a young woman from Montreuil, lives in Paris. She falls in love with Tholomyès, a wealthy student who gets her pregnant and then abandons her. Fantine returns to her home village with her daughter, Cosette. The Thénardiers turn out to be a family of scoundrels who abuse Cosette while spoiling their own two daughters, Eponine and Azelma. Valjean and Cosette move to a run-down part of Paris. Javert discovers their hideout, however, and they are forced to flee. They find refuge in a convent, where Cosette attends school and Valjean works as a gardener. Marius Pontmercy is a young man who lives with his wealthy grandfather, M. Gillenormand. Because of political differences within the family, Marius has never met his father, Georges Pontmercy. After his father dies, however, Marius learns more about him and comes to admire his father’s democratic politics. Angry with his grandfather, Marius moves out of Gillenormand’s house and lives as a poor young law student. While in law school, Marius associates with a group of radical students, the Friends of the ABC, who are led by the charismatic Enjolras. One day, Marius sees Cosette at a public park. It is love at first sight, but the protective Valjean does his utmost to prevent Cosette and Marius from ever meeting. Their paths cross once again, however, when Valjean makes a charitable visit to Marius’s poor neighbors, the Jondrettes. The Jondrettes are in fact the Thénardiers, who have lost their inn and moved to Paris under an assumed name. After Valjean leaves, Thénardier announces a plan to rob Valjean when he returns. Alarmed, Marius alerts the local police inspector, who turns out to be Javert. The ambush is foiled and the Thénardiers are arrested, but Valjean escapes before Javert can identify him. Thénardier’s daughter Eponine, who is in love with Marius, helps Marius discover Cosette’s whereabouts. Marius is finally able to make contact with Cosette, and the two declare their love for each other. Valjean, however, soon shatters their happiness. Worried that he will lose Cosette and unnerved by political unrest in the city, Valjean announces that he and Cosette are moving to England. In desperation, Marius runs to his grandfather, M. Gillenormand, to ask for M. Gillenormand’s permission to marry Cosette. Their meeting ends in a bitter argument. When Marius returns to Cosette, she and Valjean have disappeared. Heartbroken, Marius decides to join his radical student friends, who have started a political uprising. Armed with two pistols, Marius heads for the barricades. The uprising seems doomed, but Marius and his fellow students nonetheless stand their ground and vow to fight for freedom and democracy. The students discover Javert among their ranks, and, realizing that he is a spy, Enjolras ties him up. As the army launches its first attack against the students, Eponine throws herself in front of a rifle to save Marius’s life. As Eponine dies in Marius’s arms, she hands him a letter from Cosette. Marius quickly scribbles a reply and orders a boy, Gavroche, to deliver it to Cosette. Valjean manages to intercept the note and sets out to save the life of the man his daughter loves. Valjean arrives at the barricade and volunteers to execute Javert. When alone with Javert, however, Valjean instead secretly lets him go free. As the army storms the barricade, Valjean grabs the wounded Marius and flees through the sewers. When Valjean emerges hours later, Javert immediately arrests him. Valjean pleads with Javert to let him take the dying Marius to Marius’s grandfather. Javert agrees. Javert feels tormented, torn between his duty to his profession and the debt he owes Valjean for saving his life. Ultimately, Javert lets Valjean go and throws himself into the river, where he drowns. Marius makes a full recovery and is reconciled with Gillenormand, who consents to Marius and Cosette’s marriage. Their wedding is a happy one, marred only when Valjean confesses his criminal past to Marius. Alarmed by this revelation and unaware that it was Valjean who saved his life at the barricades, Marius tries to prevent Cosette from having contact with Valjean. Lonely and depressed, Valjean takes to his bed and awaits his death. Marius eventually finds out from Thénardier that Valjean saved Marius’s life. Ashamed that he mistrusted Valjean, Marius tells Cosette everything that has happened. Marius and Cosette rush to Valjean’s side just in time for a final reconciliation. Happy to be reunited with his adopted daughter, Valjean dies in peace.

Les Miserables has plenty of points to make, and while it inevitably fails on some and perhaps even on the main intended theme, the story is told with sufficient honesty to mostly work. The first half of the film is a slice of life movie of the life of a cop in an impoverished French slum, while the second half gets into its bigger political ideals. Ly clearly has vision and strong storytelling skills, as information is communicated with minimal exposition, and the pace is swift. There is some ambiguity in how good or helpful the characters in the movie are, particularly Greaser. We get a sense for what life is like living in the slums, but not a sense of what any of the boys are actually like. The second half dives deeper into its grander ideas, and one main point is made effectively, while many fall short. To me, the main theme of the movie was that absolute power absolutely corrupts, which is why accountability is essential for police officers, who are supposed to uphold the law. This is obviously personified by Chris, but also represented in the gradual use of force in the other two cops. With the quote from Les Mis at the end and the grand finale he has, I think Ly was going for a story of simmering tension between cops and unhappy citizens, until the shot was the last straw and the people rebel. There wasn't enough build for me in terms of the people's dissatisfaction and resentment towards the cops for this to really be effective. The main performance by the actor playing Greaser could've been much better, as he didn't really convey any emotion to me. It's a strange ending, especially with the quote about people not being good or bad but being cultivated, cause that really doesn't come across the rest of the movie. I do like the way the story is told visually and think it's an engaging plot and premise, but just don't think most of the ideas fully cohere. Decent film, but if my suspicions about Portrait are right, France probably made the wrong call on its Oscar nominee.
